Waterbirth

Waterbirth

For thousands of years women have been using water to ease labor and facilitate birth. The water reduces gravity’s pull, the warmth helps ease the pains of labor, and both allow moms to move around freely and achieve a level of comfort that, in turn, reduces their levels of fear and anxiety. When labor becomes physically easier, a women’s ability to calmly concentrate is improved and she is able to focus inward on the birth process.

The ease of the mother who labors and gives birth in water is transferred to the child. The water offers a familiar comfort after the stress of the birth, reassuring the child and allowing for a gentle transition to life outside mom’s womb.

Using water in labor and birth:

  • Increases comfort and reduces pain

  • Reduces perineal tears

  • Provides for ease of movement

  • Room for partner to participate in the labor and birth

  • Decreases blood pressure

  • Gentle transition for baby

  • Helps mom relax and increases efficiency of labor

  • Provides privacy and security to laboring mom

  • Reduces interventions and length of labor
